The reefs between the three Gili islands are shallow, warm and unusually easy to explore, which is why a short boat trip around them is the single most popular thing to do here. Departing from Gili Trawangan, this outing links the best of all three islands into one relaxed few hours on the water.
You meet at the harbour area and set off on a boat with your snorkeling guide, heading first to a reef site where coral gardens sit only a few metres below the surface. Fish life is dense and immediate here: parrotfish crunching at coral, schools of fusiliers passing in silver sheets, clownfish guarding their anemones. Because the water is shallow and clear, you see plenty even while floating on the surface.
The next stop is the stretch of reef off Gili Meno known for green sea turtles, which graze in the shallows and rise slowly to breathe. Sightings are common, and watching a turtle glide past at arm’s length is usually the moment everyone remembers. Nearby lies the well-known underwater sculpture installation, a circle of human figures standing on the sand a few metres down. It is a strange and beautiful sight, and one of the most photographed spots in the Gilis. The final stop takes you to reef near Gili Air before the boat turns back toward Trawangan.
